Firefighters were called to the single-story manufactured home on First Avenue in Friendsville around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, March 10, after one of the occupants spotted smoke and flames in the kitchen, Maryland State Fire Marshal officials said.
The woman immediately called 911 and tried to rescue her pets, but the fire spread quickly.
When firefighters from the Friendsville Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department arrived, they found one dog trapped under a bed and managed to get it out safely.
It took 45 firefighters about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. No one was injured, but the home’s structure suffered an estimated $90,000 in damage, with another $15,000 in lost belongings.
Investigators say a smoke alarm was present but failed to activate. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner as officials urge anyone with information to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Western Regional Office at (301) 766-3888.
